Professional biography
Brian has taught English as a second language in Australia, New Zealand, and Italy and has published extensively internationally in peer-reviewed journals. His current projects include editing two books:
- New Directions for ESP Research, with Diane Belcher and Ann Johns, to be published by the University of Michigan Press
- Companion to Discourse Analysis, with Ken Hyland for the Continuum companion series.
He has taught postgraduate courses in the areas of second-language teaching and learning, language curriculum design and methodology, language testing, research methods, discourse and pragmatics, language for specific purposes, second-language acquisition, and thesis and dissertation writing.

Current projects
- Writing in the academy: the practice-based thesis as an evolving genre. This project aims to examine the particular nature and character of practice-based doctoral theses and, via this examination, to make both practical and theoretical contributions to the field of research higher degree supervision and training and advanced academic literacies research (with Sue Starfield and Louise Ravelli, University of New South Wales) Australian Research Council Discovery Grant 2008-2010.
