Professional biography

Hoa Thi Mai Nguyen began her career as a lecturer in TESOL in Vietnam. She obtained her PhD in education at the University of Queensland, Australia. Her PhD research was highly recognised by a number of awards such as Research Higher Degree Excellence 2010 and the N V Varghese Prize for Comparative Education. She advocates a professional experience reform based on the notions of collaboration, reciprocity, and critical reflection. She has experience teaching TESOL and training pre-service and in-service teachers.  Her ongoing research interests have been in the areas of  teacher education, teacher professional development, mentoring, TESOL, and activity theory.  In 2012, she joined the Faculty of Education and Social Work. She was awarded the prestigious and highly competitive University of Sydney Postdoctoral Fellowship to pursue her research interests which focus on exploring how preservice teacher learn to teach during the professional experience from a sociocultural perspective.
