(Ian is) currently the Head of Ursula Hall and Toad Hall, and a Visitor in the School of History, at The Australian National University. Since graduating from Sydney University (BA DipEd) he has held teaching appointments at Ku-Ring-Gai High School, Cromer High School, Rivendell Special School (where he was Teacher-in-Charge, working with then Director, Professor Marie Bashir), Trinity Grammar School and Sydney Grammar School (where he was Counsellor and Careers Master). Ian completed an MA in special education (student welfare) at Macquarie University in 1978, and a CertTESOL (ACU) in 1993.
In 1994, Ian was appointed Dean of New College at UNSW and, in 2002, Principal of The Kensington Colleges. While at New College, he completed a PhD in history, focusing on the relationship of Christian denominations with Australia’s secular universities in the establishment of denominational residential colleges. Ian’s particular link with the Faculty is with Professor Geoff Sherington who was one of his PhD examiners.
Ian is a former President of The Teachers’ Guild of NSW, Chair of the General Committee of the Bible Society (NSW), President of the UNSW Alumni Association, and Chair of the Council of St Catherine’s School, Waverley. He is currently a member of the Council of the Sydney College of Divinity and Chair of the Lucas-Tooth Scholarship Trust. He is convenor of this year’s national conference, to be held in Canberra in September, of University Colleges Australia (UCA), the former Association of Heads of Australian University Colleges and Halls.
