Maurice Saxby is one of Australia's foremost authorities on Australian children's literature. The first national president of the Children's Book Council of Australia, he has been granted life membership in recognition of his achievements, also receiving a Children's Book Council National Council Citation in 1990. Among his many other awards are the Nan Chauncy Award (2002), the Lady Cutler Award (1989), the Dromkeen Medal (1983), and, in 1995, Member in the Order of Australia (AM). Saxby is a prolific reviewer of Australian children's books, with reviews published in Magpies, Reading Time, Viewpoint, and Orana, as well as in national newspapers. He has edited anthologies of poetry, short stories, myths, and legends. His children's literature criticism appears in various journals and in a number of significant works that document the history and significance of Australian children's literature, including Give Them Wings: The Experience of Children's Literature (1987), The Proof of the Puddin': Australian Children's Literature 1970–1990 (1993), Books in the Life of the Child: Bridges to Literature and Learning (1997), Offered to Children: A History of Australian Children's Literature 1841–1941 (1998), and Images of Australia: A History of Australian Children's Literature 1941–1970 (2002).
