Professor Mike Baynham is Professor of TESOL in the School of Education at the University of Leeds in the UK. His professional background is in adult TESOL and literacy. Before moving to Leeds, Mike spent 10 years at the University of Technology, Sydney, as Director of the Centre for Language and Literacy. Before that he worked in London in adult and higher education. Mike's academic background is in sociolinguistics, but he has always been involved in and committed to applied linguistics.

As an Honorary Professor with Sydney School of Education and Social Work, Mike will guide the development of the Sydney Institute of Community Languages Education's three-year research plan. He will also be responsible for leading workshops of research assistants and researchers from the University of Sydney and other universities working in the field of community languages education, and he will support SICLE's application for two ARC grant submissions, as well as lead the institute's funded research into the development and trialling of language progression for community languages.
