Professional biography

Kate was appointed to the faculty in 2008 and is the coordinator of HSIE Secondary Curriculum for both the Master of Teaching Program and the combined BA/ BEd program. She also coordinates the Meeting the Needs of Cultural Diversity unit in the undergraduate program. Prior to her appointment Kate was a lecturer within the Teacher Education Program at Macquarie University and a part-time lecturer within the degree and diploma programs at the Koori Centre at the University of Sydney.

Kate brings to these positions a long career within the NSW Department of Education and Communities as a classroom teacher and member of the school executive. She has also undertaken significant positions within the Department of Education and Communities as the State Manager for the Disadvantaged Schools Program, the Gender Equity Program and the Gifted and Talented Program. Kate has also worked at the NSW Board of Studies as Senior Curriculum Office HSIE and more recently as the Senior Project Manager for the current Years 7-10 Aboriginal Studies. She chaired the Legal Studies Syllabus Committee as well as the HSC Legal Studies Examination Committee. She was for five years the Supervisor of Marking for the HSC Legal Studies Examination. Kate was also a member of the HSC Aboriginal Studies Examination Committee.

Kate was admitted to the NSW Bar in 1984.

Kate is currently undertaking a PhD under the supervision of Professor Raewyn Connell and Associate Supervisor A/Professor Deb Hayes.

  • Currently the coordinator for the USYD EDFAC Global Education Project ($40,000 in 2010 and $25,000 funding grants from NSW Professional Teachers Council/ AusAid (with A/Prof Tim Allender, Dr A Sriprakash)
  • Exploring Culture as a verb: A partnership Program with low ses culturally diverse schools (TIGS Grant $24,000 A/Prof Cruicshank, K Keeley)
  • Meeting the Needs of Cultural Diversity: A Study of the ongoing partnership with Birrong Boys' High School and the students of EDSE 5010 Meeting the Needs of Cultural Diversity (funded by a grant from the NSW Professional Teachers Council/AusAid $5,000 in 2011)
