Professional biography
Dr. Huizhong Shen is Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education and Social Work, the University of Sydney, where he has served a range of senior roles including Associate Dean, International (2008-09), Director of China Education Centre (2003-09) in the Faculty of Education and Social Work, and Founding Director of Confucius Institute at the University of Sydney (2008-09). Huizhong was instrumental in assisting the University in its China-focused initiatives. The Master of Education in TESOL is one of the significant international projects that he has developed with colleagues for the University of Sydney. It was the first transnatinoal program that had been approved by Chinese Ministry of Education. The exemplary model of international collaboration has been copied by a number of Australian and British universities.
Prior to his appointment at the University of Sydney, Huizhong had served as Senior Language Adviser for Education Queensland (1996-1999), providing curriculum and pedagogical support to Chinese language teachers across the state of Queensland. He also helped manage the Queensland-China educational agreements for teacher and student exchange programs and a principal's work shadowing program.
More recently, Huizhong was appointed by invitation as Professor and Assistant Dean (I&E) in the Faculty of Education, QUT to manage and expand the Faculty’s international portfolio (2009-11). The innovative projects he developed with colleagues in partnership with key institutions included Teaching University's Subjects in the Medium of English and English Pedagogy and Research for Senior Chinese Academics and a multi stakeholder ARC Linage project.
Huizhong has undertaken research, PhD supervision and publications in foreign language learning, language teacher education, crosscultural pedagogies for language learning, ICT-based language instruction and researching Chinese English as an emerging variety of English. Currently Huizhong is the Lead Chief Investigator of a large Australia Research Council Linkage project (2011-13): Images, Perceptions and Resources: Enhancing Australia's Role in China's English Language Education(AUS$265,000) as well as an Australian Commonwealth government NALSSP project (2011-13): Interactive Web-based Video Teaching/Learning Platform for Language Skill Development and Intercultural Understanding(AUS$352,600).
Huizhong's numerous publications include books, monographs, articles, and curriculum materials in print and CD-Rom. His recent publications are: Teaching Academic Writing (co-authored), Developments and Prospects of English Teaching in China (edited), Postmodernism and Process Pedagogy (sole authored), Continuum Companion to Research Methods in Applied Linguistics (co-authored) and Academic Writing for College English Students (co-authored). He is also the lead writer of two Chinese national English textbook projects commissioned by two premier university publishers. Huizhong is a regular key-note speaker at local and international language conferences, and frequently consulted by educational and government bodies in Australia and overseas on language education policy and practice, and international cooperation.
Huizhong's academic credentials include a BA in English and English and American Literature from Fudan University, a PhD in Education, a BEd in English/Applied Linguistics (1st Class Hons.) and a Graduate Diploma in Education (Languages) from La Trobe University.

- Lead Chief Invetigator of an ARC Linkage project entiled Images, Perceptions and Resources: Enhancing Australia's Role in China's English Language Education (Project ID: LP100200397). This project examines Australian-based English digital resources and related pedagogy for EFL learning in China.
- Lead Chief Investigator of a Commonwealth Government NALSSP Grant (2011-13).The project entitled:Interactive Web-based Video Teaching/Learning Platform for Language Skill Development and Intercultural Understanding, has been awarded by DEEWR and aims to create an online interactive learning platform for enhanced language and culture learning at the school level.
